What She Did Have

The best thing about her

was how she walked,

undulating, slow waves

never hurrying, a ship

on the ocean, steady wind

propelling an unvarying

advance, signifying

purpose—

Pretty, too, though

her upper lip, permanently

curled, conveyed contempt

and disdain regardless

of intent—

a hopeless arriviste

for whom I could have

no lasting affection,

but watching her walk

kept my attention

Myth without Text

It was in Rome that I saw

the most beautiful girl

standing on a sidewalk talking

to her friends, schoolmates,

all of them no more than sixteen

or seventeen years old—

this one stood out from the rest,

black hair and eyes, porcelain skin,

she glowed amid dirty air,

rambunctious traffic, surly passersby—

And here I was, fifty-two years old,

stunned by this face,

Cassiopeia to Helen to her—

Ambushed by Beauty, I fled

like Creon of Thebes from

the uncatchable Cadmeian vixen
